(Basic Principles of Siddha Medicine):
Siddha medicine is one of the best indigenous medical systems of India that originated from the Tamil civilization. Siddha Maruthuva Moolathathuvam is the basis for learning the principles of Siddha Medicine and becoming the best Siddha Doctor. The literary evidence of Siddha medicine is believed to be as old as the Sangam period, with its origin around 10,000 BC.
Siddha medicine includes theories of Five Elements (Aimpootham), and Three Forces/Faults (Mukkuttram). The Eight Methods of Examination (Envakai Thervukal) is used to determine diagnosis, etiology, treatment, and prognosis. Siddha Medicine is said to have originated under the guidance of Lord Shiva and the father of Siddha Medicine was Agastya. Among the 18 Siddhas, Thirumool, Bokar, Yugimuni, Theraiyar, etc. have contributed significantly to this Siddha system. They firmly believed that the physical body is an instrument to attain "Veeduperu" or "Mukthi" (to become one with the Universal soul). They so preserved it through the practice of Vatham (Alchemy), Vaidhyam (Treatment), Yogam (Astangayogam), and Gnanam (knowledge).
Siddha system is based on the fundamentals of " Andathil Ullathae Pindam Pindathil Ullathae "Andam" (the relationship between the universe and the human body) and 96 Thathuvam (Basic Principles) which includes the concepts of five elements, three humours, and seven physical constituents. The Annamaya kosa or the physical body is made up of these seven physical constituents.
Uyir Thathukkal also called Trithodam or Mukkutram (Vaatham, Pitham, and Kabam).
Udal Thathukkal are the physical constituents, or the seven tissues ( Saaram, Senneer, Oon, Konzhuppu, Enbu, Moolai, and Sukkilam).
The 96 Thathuvam includes the Physical, Physiological, Psychological, and Intellectual aspects of every human. The five primordial elements manifest themselves as human through these 96 basic factors.
Panchabootham | Five elements | 5 |
Pori | Sense organs | 5 |
Pulan | Five senses | 5 |

As long as these 96 philosophies are in balance in the human body, no diseases will occur and when there is an imbalance, many diseases occur. Knowing the basics of these 96 principles helps a student to become an excellent Siddha Practitioner. Specialist teachers are available in the basic philosophy of Siddha Medicine (Siddha Maruthuva Adipadai Thathuvam) to teach this medical subject to the students. Also, the college has a digital classroom facility.
